FAR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE

  • Works for the College’s President as academic monitor of academic progress

for all student/athletes (s/a).

  • Works with the Department of Athletics to create a strong academic presence

among administrators, coaches and s/a.

  • Is responsible for maintaining records for all phases of Initial Eligibility.
  • Is responsible for maintaining records for all phases of ‘progress to the degree.’
  • Is responsible to create weekly and when necessary bi-weekly Initial Eligibility

lists for all coaches and athletic administrators.

  • Is responsible to contact the NCAA Clearinghouse to expedite the Initial Eligibilityprocess for s/a. This is usually done by intervening for s/a with their former high school(s), with the ACT/SAT companies, or by providing missing documentation to the Clearinghouse on behalf of the s/a.
  • Responsible to monitor or proctor the NCAA coaches recruiting test as often as necessary. Tutoring is offered for those coaches who have difficulty.
  • Responsible to update the President and Athletic Director of new or impending NCAA legislation, which may have an impact on this institution.
  • Is responsible to prepare an s/a Honor Roll each semester for the College.
  • Is responsible to evaluate all s/a ‘progress towards the degree’ at the conclusion of each semester and to report that to the President and to the athletic administration.
  • Is responsible to prepare a report indicating the cumulative academic performance of each athletic team each semester and to report any trends over the past four-year period.
  • To sit as a member of the College’s Academic Policy Committee which meets each semester to discuss College academic rules and to assess all students who fall below minimum standards whether in overall gpa, term gpa, or major gpa/ A report is then issued to all appropriate academic and athletic parties indicating the academic and eligibility status of each s/a/ S/a’s at this institution may lose their athletic eligibility at the conclusion of either the fall or spring semester as a result of having earned a term gpa<2.0 or by virtue of having fallen more than six (6) credits behind their graduating class. All NCAA rules are applied after the conclusion of each spring semester.
  • Is responsible to work with all s/a who have lost or are in jeopardy of losing athletic eligibility after each term. Advice concerning any possible remediation to their status (if any), intersession or summer course work selection or change in academic schedule is offered. Files are kept on each s/a affected by either NCAA or College academic rules relating to the disposition of the case and any interaction the FAR has with the s/a or their parents.
  • Is responsible to file all Waivers with the NCAA or appropriate Conference person.
  • Is responsible to review each sport roster before each season to ensure that all s/a walk-ons have met College and NCAA eligibility standards.
  • Is responsible to work with the Registrar to ensure that full-time enrollment is maintained throughout each semester for every s/a.
  • Is responsible to keep updated “Ineligibility Lists” each semester for all s/a.
  • Is responsible to support all academically related grant proposals for the Department of Athletics by providing gross academic data of s/a and/or contributing written sections of such grant proposals.
  • Is responsible to provide the SID with pertinent academic information to apply for all local, regional and national awards both team and individual.
  • Is responsible to interview all potential NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship applicants, to select those to apply and to ensure that each application is filed accurately, complete and on time. Any update of information on these awards is done by the FAR.
  • Is responsible to file all Conference academic awards materials such as Student-Athlete of the Year, Academic Honor Roll, Sportsmanship, etc.
  • Is responsible to nominate and complete all s/a related applications required for s/a awards within the ECAC. (Robbins Award, etc.)
  • Is responsible to nominate and complete all s/a related applications required for s/a awards within the NCAA. (Valor, Elite Eight, Byers, etc.)
  • Is responsible to collect and present academic data to College officials for end of season s/a awards.
  • Is responsible to suggest, legislate, monitor and support all college academic rules of eligibility, as well as rules for class attendance for all s/a. And to educate athletic staff concerning these rules. Ensures that such information appears in and is accurately presented in the College Catalog and Student Handbook.
  • Is responsible, when asked, to academically advise s/a regarding course selection, section changes, issues with missed classes or with classroom problems.
  • Is responsible to act as a resource person for the Dean of Studies Office, Academic Support Center and Dean of Students Office regarding s/a academic issues.
  • Interviews prospective s/a for coaches when asked during official visits.
  • Is responsible to review and assess, when asked, the high school records of recruited s/a relative to potential Clearinghouse or College academic rule issues.
  • Is responsible to review transcripts of prospective s/a transfers.
  • Is responsible to monitor and sign all squad lists after first providing academic information to our Financial Aid officer regarding countable aid 15.02.4, etc.
  • Is responsible to speak at College s/a recruiting events on campus. A presentation on academic life and academic rules is given to s/a and their families. The FAR then becomes a contact person for academic questions.
  • Acts as liaison between faculty and the Athletics Department.
  • Provides updated academically related data concerning s/a to the Trustees, President, Dean of Studies and Admissions Office. (Graduation Rates, community service awards, academic awards, etc.)
  • Expected to prepare evaluations and recommendations of Proposed NCAA Legislation in advance of the National Convention. Expected to attend the National Conference as a voting delegate along with the Director of Athletics.
  • Participated in all investigations of any College NCAA rules violations.
