Faculty Athletics Representative’s Job Description

The Faculty Athletics Representative is appointed by the president and serves until he/she is replaced in that position.

1. The job of the Faculty Athletics Representative as described in the Faculty Handbook is to:

• serve as a member of the Faculty Athletics Committee
• serve as one of three official representatives of the University to its conference affiliation
• periodically serve as an officer of the conference affiliation
• frequently serve on various Conference committees
• work with the Associate Athletics Director (Compliance Officer), the Senior Woman Administrator, and the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services

2. In addition, the current FAR is responsible for the following areas:

• works continually throughout the year on student athlete eligibility - reviews transcripts of all student athletes, determines hours taken, GPA, and progress toward graduation
• serves as advocate of student athlete in cases of dispute/review
• when requested, will serve as consultant to the Student Athlete Advisory Council
• together with the Faculty Athletics committee, updates and gives the student athlete exit survey/interview, provides statistical analysis of same, and reviews the results
• helps the Compliance Officer conduct introductory team meetings at the start of each academic year
• attends compliance meetings with the coaches
• gives coaches exams
• provides leadership in gathering information for post-graduate scholarships for student athletes
• attends conference meetings
• attends NCAA Compliance Seminars
• attends NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) meetings
• attends the annual NCAA convention
• when warranted, will serve as chair of SACS committee on Athletics and as coordinator of the NCAA 10 yr. program review and chair of  the Academic Portion of that review.

3. The following is strictly what Professor Hightower does and is not associated with most FARs

• serves as owner (organizer and keeper) of the FARA mailing list
• serves as creator of the FARA webpage 
• is the Secretary/Treasurer of the FARA Executive Board
• attends as many home athletics contests as is possible
• is serving as member of SOCON Softball Committee
• is serving as member of SOCON Baseball Committee
• is serving as chair of the SOCON Resolutions Committee
• served on Elon Academic Services Review Committee
• is member of NCAA Academic Services Review Committee – purpose to set policy
