Faculty Athletics Representative

Position Description

The NCAA formerly recognizes four individuals from each member institution:

  • I.                   President,
  • II.                Director of Athletics,
  • III.             Senior Woman Administrator,
  • IV.             Faculty Athletics Representative.

The NCAA defines the “Faculty Athletics Representative” as a member of the institution’s faculty or administrative staff (who holds faculty rank) who is designated by the institution’s chief executive officer to represent the Athletics Department, the College, and its faculty in the institution’s relationship with the NCAA and Ithaca College conference affiliations.. 

The duties of the FAR include:

  • Working with the Director of Athletics, Associate Director of Athletics, and Assistant Director of Athletics on programs to benefit student athletes. 
  • Working with the Associate Director of Athletics regarding compliance/eligibility processing.
  • Receiving and reviewing eligibility lists provided by the Associate Director of Athletics. 
  • Being knowledgeable of the procedures for certifying students as eligible for practice in competition.
  • Monitoring student athlete academic performance and ensuring that academic services are available to student athletes. 
  • Monitoring student-athlete welfare through service on the Ithaca College Life Skills Advisory Team.
  • Serving as an advisor or a source of support and help for student athletes who may be experiencing problems or having concerns.
  • Making inquiries into alleged or suspected rules violations. 
  • Informing the President, Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Life, and Athletic administration/staff about issues related to academics and athletics from conference and national FAR meetings.
  • Representing the Intercollegiate Athletics Program at faculty meetings and communicating athletics related activities and concerns to Faculty Council.
  • Educating Faculty Council on the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sport’s commitment to the academic mission of the institution.
  • Updating the Athletics staff on issues/agendas of the academic community. 
  • Meeting periodically with Athletics administrative staff and the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
  • Helping to prepare the institution’s Self-Study for the NCAA.
  • Participating in NCAA legislation discussions and attending the NCAA Convention.
  • Participating in Empire 8 Conference business activities and attending conference meetings when appropriate.
  • Assisting the Associate Director in ensuring compliance with NCAA/Conference policies.
  • Attending Intercollegiate Athletics staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participating in key discussions related to the ongoing success of the Athletics Program (to include recruiting process, future of Division III Athletics, and student athlete welfare issues).
  • Presenting the academic awards during the Senior Award Luncheon each year.
  • Processing paperwork for the nominations for scholar awards for deserving student athletes.
