POSITION DESCRIPTION
FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE
Appointment: The Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) is appointed by and reports to the President of the University.
Qualification: As per NCAA Guidelines, the FAR will member of the faculty or an administrator who holds faculty rank.
Responsibilities of the Faculty Athletics Representative:
1. To ensure that student-athletes meet all NCAA, conference and institutional requirements for eligibility for practice, financial aid and intercollegiate competition. This will involve:
- certifying academic eligibility
- reviewing, as needed, financial aid packages offered to student-athletes
2. Develop, institute and review periodic statistical reports on the academic preparation and performance of student-athletes.
3. Work with athletic director to ensure a comprehensive and effective compliance program on campus, including formal designation of responsibilities related to compliance. This will involve educating and ensuring compliance in the following areas: office of financial aid, office of admissions, registrar’s office, and Deans of the colleges.
4. Be knowledgeable in NCAA, conference and institutional rules governing athletic eligibility.
5. Be directly involved in any investigations of alleged rules violations. The FAR will review any infractions report before it is sent to the NCAA.
6. Review any Reports and Self-Studies before being sent to the NCAA.
7. Provide orientation sessions to in-coming first year students, as well as to all sports teams at the beginning of their respective seasons. Be part of exit interviews of student-athletes. The FAR should be available to student-athletes throughout the year.
8. Be a member of the Athletic Advisory Board.
9. Be the senior advisor outside of the athletic department and student affairs to the President of the University on matters related to intercollegiate athletics, which includes having access to the President of the University as needed. Along with the athletic director, formulate and recommend institutional positions on NCAA legislation and other matters relating to intercollegiate athletics on campus.
10. Represent the University at the NCAA Convention on a yearly basis.
11. Represent the University at the FARA Fall Forum on a yearly basis,
12. Represent the University at conference meetings as needed.
13. Be a contact person for the university with the NCAA.
14. Represent the University at conference meetings as needed.
15. Report on a regular basis to the UNE faculty on academic issues related to student-athletes.
16. Participate in search committees for senior athletics department administrators and head coaches.
17. Receive and review any periodic audits of the athletics department that may be conducted.
18. Work with the athletic director to ensure that appropriate standards of student-athlete conduct are established (for both on- and off-campus behavior), clearly communicated and consistently enforced.
In order to carry out the above, the following support is necessary:
1. Release time from teaching responsibilities at the level of one course (3 credits), with appropriate compensation to the affected department.
2. Acknowledgment from the President and the Academic Dean of the time commitment and importance of providing this service to the University.
3. Access, through the FAR’s office computer, to admissions, academic, and financial aid records of student-athletes.
4. A travel budget, administered through the President’s office, to support travel to the annual NCAA convention, meetings of the FARA, and any additional meetings necessary to carry out the role of the FAR.
5. Have access to the athletics department budget, if needed.
6. Other institutional responsibilities for NCAA regulatory compliance must be clearly delegated to Athletics Department and/or student affairs personnel.
