Job Description
Faculty Athletics Representative
Reports to: University President
Supervises: No staff
Basic Function:
Responsible for communicating academic concerns between the faculty and the athletic department, insuring the welfare of the student-athletes, and reporting major issues to the president
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communication
Serves as liaison between the ORU faculty, administration, and the athletic department
Arranges for a report once per semester at the monthly meetings of University Faculty Assembly (Report by Faculty Athletic Representative, Athletic Director, or Tier 1 head coach)
Makes weekly reports at athletic staff meetings
Works to resolve scheduling conflicts by reviewing and approving competition schedules of all sports
Meets with faculty and/or coaches to discuss and resolve practice time conflicts with critical classes in various departments
Oversight and Review
Chairs the Athletics Advisory Council
1. Plans and officiates at semi-annual committee meetings
2. Reports minutes of activities to university President
3. Serves as ex-officio member of sub-committees on Academics, Gender and Minority Equity, and Compliance
Chairs the Student-Athlete Advisory Council
1. Plans and officiates at monthly committee meetings
2. Participates in semi-annual conference calls with other SAAC’s from the Mid-Continent Conference
3. Works to bring viable solutions to concerns brought by members of the committee
4. Meets with Athletic Executive Committee to voice concerns and offer suggestions for changes related to issues expressed by student-athletes
Serves on Athletic Executive Committee
1. Approves all major changes in athletic programs
2. Serves on selection committee for new head coaches
3. Assists in hearing grievances brought by student-athletes or athletic staff members
Serves on the Athletics Eligibility Committee
1. Assists in the certification of continuing eligibility of returning student-athletes in early summer (fall to fall) or late fall (spring to spring)
2. Reviews records of incoming freshman athletes
3. Provides final certification of eligibility for all student-athletes
4. Meets as a committee as needed to discuss individual cases or problems
Serves on Infractions Committee
1. Reviews all reported NCAA violations
2. Assists in investigating any NCAA allegations
Serves on Mid-Continent Conference Committee
1. Currently serves on Infractions Committee
2. Meets through conference calls to discuss rules violations or requests for waivers from conference rules or by-laws
Other
Nominates deserving student-athletes for NCAA post graduate scholarships and conference academic awards.
