Towson University FAR Job Description

FAR Responsibilities:  To protect the academic integrity of the Towson University Athletic program 

Who Should Serve? 

Active Teaching Faculty Member—serve as a liaison between student athletes, faculty and athletics department

         Someone who understands the governance of the university and how athletes fit into the structure

         Someone with, preferably, a collegiate athletic background who appreciates the demands on the student athletes

Specific Duties:    

  1. Interpret Legislation with a focus on the academic impact
  2. Monitor the coordination of compliance (compliance committee)
  3. Know the eligibility rules, concept of clearing house—FAR is one of five on campus who can directly contact the NCAA office
  4. Gather all compliance people together (compliance committee)—especially important with new legislation (TU meet end Sept., Mid Nov., End Feb., and Mid April—need to add student athlete, coach and student life representative)
  5. Be involved in hiring (especially with any revenue producing sport in order to present the faculty perspective) coaches, compliance officers, financial aid, registrar, AD and Associate AD, Academic Advisors, etc.
  6. Assist AD in rules education
  7. Work with Compliance Officer on all violations (primary and secondary)
  8. Be part of the appeals process—should be involved in all waiver forms
  9. Monitor academic progress of all student athletes every semester
  10. Participate in student athlete exit interviews—input into questions that should be asked concerning academic perspective
  11. Meet with all teams on field (10-20 minutes) ask coach for permission and meet with them alone—be sure to discuss scholarship opportunities (NCAA, CAA)
  12. Oversee the administration of the Coaches Certification exam
  13. Be a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee
  14. Report to the Senate
  15. Monitor Academic Advisors
  16. Facilitate and Support SAC (TU-PAWS) group (TU-ask to meet with one time a semester before registration and make study hall visits)
  17. Meet Regularly with the President (once a semester)
  18. Meet with AD regularly
  19. Anticipate problems (be aware of what is going on)
  20. Be involved in the Conference
  21. Attend NCAA Compliance seminar, Conference Meeting and FARA meeting
  22. Spot Check compliance looking at student files, clearance, eligibility and financial aid applications
